Tango classes in Swansea

Tango - Dance of connection

Tango Essence is a class and practica for learning and enjoying traditional Tango in Swansea. We have been established in Swansea since 2011 and are a friendly group of people with a wide range of ages and experience, drawn together by our love for the dance and music of Argentine Tango.

We hold a weekly class and practica and regular milongas for all levels of ability at St Paul’s Parish Centre in Sketty. We also offer small classes, private lessons and practicas from a private venue in Sketty, which has a lovely outdoor dance-floor as well as indoor space.

The tango is a feeling that is danced. That’s why it is not choreographed, though it can have sequences, like all feelings. You can dance love, rage, happiness, pleasure, every mood. The tango is not a dance to demonstrate ability but rather an interpretation of feeling. It is not just moving your feet and posturing. The tango is Argentine, but it belongs to all those who understand its feelings and its codes.

Dance is unspoken communication and can be even more profound than language. The simple act of standing shares a glimpse of what we have to give, what we exude to define our presence, what we let go of to be receptive. The tango embrace is a representation of who we are and what we communicate in every moment.

Watch some videos!

Here’s a lovely short film where people talk about their personal experiences in dancing social tango, and what can make it so addictive. Just as in this video, at Tango Essence we welcome and encourage people who don’t always want to dance in the traditional male/female roles.

Here's a professional couple dancing in a way that tango is danced socially, suitable for a crowded dance floor.

In social tango you move with your partner and with the music. The relationship between you and your partner is not personal. What is personal between the two of you is that you both are trying to caress the music with your feet. A good tango dancer is one who listens to the music.
We dance the music, not steps. You see, we are painters. We paint the music with our feet.
